Norfolk Coast: Myths and Legends

Go Deeper: unveiling the darker side of Norfolk’s coastline with Visit West Norfolk’s new booklet of out-of-season experiences…

Mist swirls over saltmarsh and shingle, swallowing the sound of the restless sea. Gulls wheel overhead, their cries sharp against the briny breeze. Listen carefully and flickering amongst this salt-sprayed cathedral of sky and sea, something else is echoing on the breeze. Can you hear it?

Ghostly howls carry across lonely marshes. Fiery eyes gleam along foggy shores and in wooded thickets. The scent of brine mingles with the faint trace of smugglers’ fires. On moonlit nights, the eerie lantern lights of a lost sailor flicker across the marsh, luring the unwary to a watery grave. Rumours abound of a witch’s heart soaring into the river in an ancient port town, bursting with ghostly happenings.

All along the Norfolk coast, from the historic port of King’s Lynn to the windswept shores of Hunstanton and Holkham, myths, legends and folklore weave a tapestry of mystery and wonder. The veil between the living and the spectral appears thin, and every sand dune, churchyard and saltmarsh guards a tale waiting to be uncovered.

This is a coastline where history and myth entwine. Delve deeper beneath the stunning landscape and unspoiled nature, and you’ll discover a region with a rich and fascinating history – along with tales of mermaids, phantoms, demonic fairies and a hellhound spitting fire from a single, fiendish eye.

Dare you to go deeper into the dark heart of Norfolk’s myths and legends? Are you brave enough to seek out spooky stories amid the region’s wild beauty? This ancient land awaits your curiosity, brimming with tales to make your toes curl and send shivers down your spine…

Mapping the Myths: Your invitation to ‘Go Deeper’ along the Norfolk Coast

For those who feel the pull of the unknown, the Norfolk Coast: Myths & Legends booklet (available late November 2025 to Easter 2026 from leading coastal venues) offers a gateway to the hidden heart of Norfolk’s coast. More than a simple walk along the shore, we invite you to journey through time, legend and landscape, where every stop uncovers a new layer of story.

At the heart of the project is a beautifully crafted booklet. Inside, you’ll discover fifteen carefully curated experiences stretching from the historic streets of King’s Lynn to the rugged cliffs of Cromer, with a few forays to inland sites and the enchanting Norfolk Broads. Each ‘experience’ is designed for exploration at your own pace, ranging from a single day’s adventure to immersive three-day odysseys.

Step by step, the Norfolk coast reveals its stories, not just through mossy stones, tumbledown ruins and tidal saltmarsh, but through digital doorways. Found within each of the fifteen experiences, a ‘Go Deeper’ QR code acts as a digital key to the next step in your journey. Scan it, and you’ll be led to a specific section of the Be Norfolk website, where each itinerary unfolds, guiding you from one story-rich location to the next. Along the way, you’ll encounter tales of myth, legend and folklore alongside captivating history and natural wonders.

To add to the heady atmosphere of the experiences within the booklet, this free publication includes a selection of superb collage artwork specially created for this project by Norfolk artist Leah Bowman, with a stunning cover by the artist Jodie Lowther. The text within each experience has also been given a shine and polish by local duo CULTure Babylon – the team behind the very popular Fear in the Fens festival in King’s Lynn.

Whether you’re a visitor to our region or a curious local, our booklet promises a thrilling adventure through land and sea, the living and the dead, and history, myth and legend. What mysteries await your discovery? Which stories ignite your curiosity and draw you deeper into the wild heart and timeless magic of the Norfolk coast?

Coastal Chronicles: Legends & Lore from Norfolk’s Shore

Unlock Norfolk’s coastal secrets. Ghostly legends, hidden histories and wild landscapes teeming with life. Fifteen trails, countless illustrated stories… Here’s a flavour of what you could discover as you go deeper along the Norfolk coast.

Haunted Histories & Supernatural Encounters

Amid the skeletal ruins of Binham Priory, a mournful tune of loss and regret drifts through the arches as dusk falls. The haunting lament of an ill-fated fiddler who ventured into a tunnel in search of a ghostly, black-robed monk, never to return.

On a sandbank off Sheringham, the forlorn song of a mermaid was once answered by the sweet sound of a church congregation, luring her to shore where she remains trapped amid the pews. Beneath Blakeney, smugglers’ tunnels are rumoured to hide hyter sprites, long-limbed, spider-like fairies that snatch children who stray onto the saltmarsh at night.

Ghostly tales ripple across the region. The slow, steady beat of a phantom drum echoes across the freezing Broads in winter, as a frozen drummer boy seeks his forbidden love. Screams of a lost cockler child haunt the mudflats of Stiffkey on foggy nights. Most fearsome of all, the demonic Black Shuck stalks coastal paths and graveyards, its howl chilling your blood and its single eye spitting hellfire.

King’s Lynn, too, is no stranger to restless souls. At Margaret Read’s witch trial and execution, legend says her heart soared from her chest, vanishing into the river’s dark embrace. At True’s Yard Fisherfolk Museum, the echoes of fisherfolk voices and superstitions linger, with nearly 40 ghosts said to haunt these ancient walls.

These stories are just the beginning… With the 36 Coastliner bus linking King’s Lynn and Wells, and the Coasthopper running between Wells and Cromer, it’s easy to explore further – and at your own pace. Hop on and off as you like; no car required. Each itinerary is unlocked with a simple scan. Follow the QR codes in the free official printed booklet and let the coastline reveal its secrets as you go.

A world of gruesome histories and dark coastal tales awaits, for those brave enough to go deeper. From late November 2025 onwards many leading attractions, businesses and coastal accommodation providers will stock copies of our booklet for you to pick up – for free!
