Tourism Ambassadors Course

Thinking of entering (or re-entering) the local tourism and hospitality industry of west Norfolk?

Visit West Norfolk provides a free online version of a fondly remembered local tourism course for staff, volunteers and local communities…

Do you think you know west Norfolk? Now’s the chance to test your knowledge!

2025 marked the 21st Anniversary of the original West Norfolk Ambassadors Course programme launch at the King’s Lynn Town Hall. In 2004 the Tourism department (now known as Visit West Norfolk) joined forces with the Regeneration and Economic Development team within the Borough Council of King’s Lynn & West Norfolk and started to deliver a seasonal face-to-face course to the local tourism and hospitality industry, a course which was well-attended over the following two decades.

A wide variety of people from the local area attended the free half-day course sessions over the years. From sessions dedicated to west Norfolk hospitality and coastal resorts staff to local taxi drivers, young apprentices and business owners, the Tourism department frequently received positive feedback from West Norfolk Ambassador course attendees.

In 2024 the Visit West Norfolk team began looking at ways in which many more people could sign-up to a more accessible and colourful online version of the updated course content, many of whom would be using a wide variety of smart devices and computers. With kind support from UK Shared Prosperity Funding, Visit West Norfolk are pleased to announce the launch of a brand-new digital version of the Ambassadors Course.

Completely free for anyone to sign-up and gain a certificate of completion (for scores over 80%!), the online course – which can take around an hour to complete – now covers five themed sections: local knowledge of ‘King’s Lynn and west Norfolk’, ‘Attractions and Activities’, ‘Tourism Definitions’, ‘Helping Tourism Succeed’, and the importance of ‘Customer Service’.

Who is this course for?

The online course is being delivered by Visit West Norfolk in two slightly different versions, with one version tailored towards those under 24 years of age, such as college leavers and those entering our local tourism and hospitality industry for the first time. Business owners and venue managers within the local tourism industry may wish to signpost their staff to this course accordingly.

The other version of the online course is more focused on those over the age of 24, which could include older volunteers, new business owners, retirees and those coming from out of the area to live in west Norfolk for the first time.

Much of the new course material centres on the same core content from the classic face-to-face version of the course, though with significantly updated information on the latest tourism trends and local investment projects. There are lots of new video clips of the course presenter testing young people’s local knowledge – sometimes with entertaining results!

With the aim to help enable local people of all ages in becoming enthusiastic Ambassadors for King’s Lynn and West Norfolk, the course aims to inspire those who will go on to actively promote a positive, vibrant image of the Borough, helping to attract visitors and create a thriving economy. Beyond those aims, Visit West Norfolk hopes that everyone who completes the course becomes a proud West Norfolk Tourism Ambassador, spreads the word about the fantastic quality of life local people enjoy and all the great things about living and working in west Norfolk, and be confident when talking about current local developments – not only in King’s Lynn but throughout the borough.

Now is a great time to test your local knowledge and become a proud West Norfolk Tourism Ambassador! Access the completely free West Norfolk Tourism Ambassadors course now:
